Q: How are the Girl Scout program goals a part of STUDIO 2B?

A: Girls both in and out of Girl Scouts have had a hard time articulating what Girl Scouts are about. It is hard to belong to something that you can't put into words. The 4 B's are the four program goals written in teen-friendly language-become, belong, believe, build. During focus groups and surveys, girls explored new ways to express the four Girl Scout Program goals - to make them meaningful and understandable to them. Girls and teens want to know what their activities are based on - what does the program mean to them and become, belong, believe and build express that directly to girls.

Become:

Celebrate yourself today and becomes your best self in the future.
Belong: Be part of a group where you have fun, relate to others with respect, and develop lasting friendship.
Believe:
Develop you ideas and voice what's important to you.
Build:
Take action on what you care about and make a difference.

Q: What does it mean to have three age groups of girls 11-17?

A: The research verified that girls have very different developmental needs as they progress through the stages of adolescence. Girls 11-13, 13-15, and 15-17 differ in their interest, worries, issues, and favorite activities. Sometimes, they want to share these with girls the same age. At other times, for example, when planning a major trip or a large community service project, they can benefit part of a mixed-age grouping. Also, each girl is unique.

In STUDIO 2B, girls can mix and match books, activities, and groups to meet there needs and interest. A mature twelve year-old may fare better with teens 13-15, while a girl who is sixteen who wants to learn how to swim may join a group of 11-13 year old who are taking swimming lessons.

Q: Will the Cadette Girl Scout Handbook, A Resource Book for Senior Girl Scouts, and Interest Projects for Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts continue to be available?

A:
STUDIO 2B is the name under which all Girl Scout program activities for girl's ages 11-17 fall. STUDIO 2B offers a menu of participation options to girls. Girls will be able to earn a Girl Scout Silver and Gold Award as well as do activities from a Focus book. They can earn Interest Project awards and charms. They can plan trips, talk about thing they have read in a Collections book, go online to www.studio2b.org , plan a project based on Girl Scouts booklets. All Girl Scout resources for girls 11-17 are a part of STUDIO 2B. All are equally valuable and real Girl Scout materials and represent viable ways for girls to be a Girl Scout.

Girls ages 11-17 should be fully aware of all the Girl Scout materials available to them and should be the ones choosing that they read, do, and plan in STUDIO 2B. They should be able to mix and match depending upon their needs and interests.

There is no date for any materials to be discontinued. Just as is the case with all Girl Scout resources, books that are rarely used may be phased out.

Q: Why weren't the Cadette Girl Scout Handbook and A Resource Book for Senior Girl Scouts simply updated?

A:
Research showed that only a small percentage of girls were using the current materials. The research also pointed out quite strongly that girls wanted resources that were not so school-like in text and design. They wanted more current and interactive materials that spoke to them with a "by girls, for girls" message.

Q: Will the Girl Scout Silver and Gold Awards be available to girls ages 11-17?

A:
Absolutely, Girls who would like to complete a Girl Scout Silver or Gold Award Project and earn these high-level awards can certainly do so. They should follow the guidelines in the Cadette Girl Scout Handbook and A Resource Book for Senior Girl Scouts. New resources that are based on input from girls, advisors, and councils to help coach girls through the process of earning the awards are in development. These will be available in 2004 and will be designed to fit inside the STUDIO 2B Basics binder. Girls who are Junior Girl Scouts and eleven years old may also earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award and use STUDIO 2B materials.

Q: Are the charms that girls earn when they set goals through a Focus book official awards and can they be used to complete requirement needed to earn other awards, such as the Girl Scout Silver or Gold Award?

A:
A charm is the equivalent of an Interest Project award or a badge. The goals set and met by each girl in order to earn her charm per Focus book would match an Interest project on the same topic. However, a girl can not do an activity in a Focus book that is similar to an activity in an Interest Project award and apply it to earn an Interest Project as well - no "double dipping" so to speak. For example, the Sports for Life Interest Project award has an activity in which girls learn about the shoes and clothing needed for their sport. The Focus book, On Track, also has an activity in which girls learn about running shoes. Girls can not do one and apply it to both an Interest Project and a charm. Girls can apply both charms and Interest Project awards as requirements for higher-level awards.
