Parents, Guardians and Volunteers

Q: What is the cost of Girl Scouting?
A: There is a $10 yearly membership fee for girls and adults that goes directly to the Girl Scouts of the USA. The membership year is from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30. Troop dues help to finance programs, although the Troop may also learn money though the annual Girl Scout cookie sale. Financial assistance is available for any girl or adult in need.

Q: Do I need to buy my daughter a uniform?
A: Uniforms are optional. Many Troops decorate their own shirts. Wearing the Girl Scout Membership pin shows that you are a Girl Scout. When asked to represent Girl Scout in public, girls should be in uniform or dress for the occasion with something that identifies them as Girl Scouts.

Q : Does my Girl Scout have to sell cookies?
A: Participation in this Girl Scout program activity is voluntary. However, girls tell us selling Girl Scout cookies® is fun. Girls practice life skills, such as teamwork, money management and entrepreneurship. This activity provides Girl Scout councils with revenue to support Girl Scouting in local communities, including a portion that goes back to the Girl Scout troop/group selling the cookies. Customers purchase great cookies and know they are supporting the girls in their area.

Q: Where does the money earned from Girl Scout cookie® sales go?
A: The best way to understand where the money goes is by picturing a cookie. A piece of the cookie goes to pay the baker for making the product. Another piece goes to the local Girl Scout council to support Girl Scouts in its area, and a third piece goes directly to the troop/group selling the cookies.

Q: What are my responsibilities as a parent if my daughter joins a Girl Scout Troop?
A: Running a successful troop requires great attention to detail. Leaders love it when Parents can come to Troop meetings from time to time. Parent involvement is fundamental in ensuring your daughter a memorable and stimulating Girl Scout experience. Here is what a leader will expect from a parent.

Be considerate and on time
Return all forms and money on time
Drop off or pick up your daughter on time
Return phone calls promptly

Q: How can I become a Girl Scout leader?
A: Girl Scout leaders are volunteers from the community. A local Girl Scout council recruiter or staff member interviews prospective leaders. After signing up, each new leader receives council orientation and age-level training. In addition, leaders are encouraged to take first-aid training offered by the council or other organizations. Councils suggest that leaders also continue their training and attend area or service unit meetings to ask questions, learn about upcoming activities, and share in a support network. All adults go through a background check and furnish references. Each leader becomes a member of Girl Scouts.

Q: Do I have to be a leader to volunteer?
A: No, there are many ways to volunteer without leading your own Troop. Listed below are examples of other volunteer opportunities at Drifting Dunes Girl Scout Council.
